Your St Louis Spring Break

Enjoy Making Memories on Your St Louis Spring Break

Making plans for your St Louis spring break? Here in Missouri, the middle of March does not guarantee any kind of Spring-like weather, but most schools in the area take a week long break and make the best of it. Some families travel for ski trips or time in the mountains, and some head south hoping for sunny skies and warmer weather.

Whether you're planning a getaway or exploring St. Louis with your children, preparation is key to creating lasting memories while keeping everyone healthy and happy.

I’m a pediatrician, but I’m also a Dad, so I know the preparation and care that goes into planning activities, packing adequately, and still having the energy and the patience to enjoy all the moments. In this blog, I’m sharing some tips for traveling with kids, sun safety, and water safety.

I’ll also be sharing some favorite spots in the St. Louis area in case your family is staying home for your St. Louis Spring Break.

Traveling with Kids On Your St. Louis Spring Break

Pack Strategically

Create a packing list organized by child, including essentials like medications, sunscreen (minimum SPF 50), and comfort items. Pack a small backpack for each child with activities, snacks, and a change of clothes for easy access during travel.

Stay Ahead of Health Concerns

Schedule a pre-travel check-up if your child has ongoing health issues. Pack a travel medical kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, children's pain reliever, antihistamines, and prescription medications. Keep your pediatrician’s office number saved in your phone for virtual consultations if needed. (My St. Louis concierge patients know they can call or text me anytime directly.)

Maintain Routines

While flexibility is part of vacation fun, maintaining some structure helps children adjust. Keep bedtimes reasonably consistent and incorporate familiar elements from home routines.

Sun Safety is Non-Negotiable

Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours or after swimming. Pack wide-brimmed hats, UV-protective swimwear, and sunglasses for additional protection. Schedule outdoor activities before 10 AM or after 4 PM to avoid peak UV hours.

Water Safety Must-Knows

Your swimsuit color matters. Bright suits, neon colors like yellow, orange, and pink are most visible in pools and open water. Avoid light blue and white, which blend in. Check out this helpful guide from Akron Children's Hospital on the best swimsuit colors for safety! Always assign a water watcher, Even if a lifeguard is present, designate an adult to keep eyes on the kids at all times. Use proper floatation devices: A U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket is best—avoid inflatable floaties, which can give a false sense of security.

Hydration Matters

Children dehydrate faster than adults. Pack insulated water bottles for each family member and establish regular water breaks, especially during active days.

Healthy Eating on the Go

Vacations can mean extra treats, but balance is key! Pack fresh fruits, veggies, and protein-rich snacks to help keep energy levels stable.

Spend Your St Louis Spring Break At Home

Here are just a few of my favorite places in the area to enjoy with my kids. Others are places that my patients enjoy. We are blessed in St. Louis to have so many free and very affordable attractions for kids.

Forest Park Adventures

Explore the St. Louis Zoo, Science Center, or rent paddleboats at the Boathouse. The Missouri History Museum also has an area that is hands-on and just for kids. Pack a picnic and make a day of it with built-in breaks for rest and snacks. Most of the Forest Park activities are free or very low-cost because it is paid for by the local taxes.

Missouri Botanical Garden

The Children's Garden offers hands-on learning through playful exploration. Spring blooms provide a colorful backdrop for family photos and nature scavenger hunts. Admission is $16 for anyone 13 & over. Children are free. There are also free mornings if you can show your St. Louis City or County residency. Check out their Tickets page for more information.

City Museum

Bring your A game to this family fun day. This one-of-a-kind playground will enthrall children of all ages with its caves, slides, and climbing structures. Dress everyone in comfortable clothes with secure footwear, and consider knee pads for younger explorers. Have a plan for meeting up in case you get separated (you very likely will). At the time of publishing this blog, ticket prices are around $20 per person. Do your research before you go and ask your friends about their experiences. If you have a child that tends to run off or isn’t a good listener, this might not be the place for you!

Purina Farms

Just a short drive from the city, this free attraction offers animal demonstrations, a pet center, and seasonal activities that children love. Check out their online Visitors Center for more details about their free family fun.

Grant's Farm

This is an easy and enjoyable outing that is a family tradition for many in the area. For decades Grant’s Farm has been an all ages attraction. Feed the goats, see the Clydesdales, and enjoy the tram ride through animal habitats. The combination of animals and outdoor space makes this a perfect spring activity. There is no charge for admission, but you do have to pay for parking - currently $17 per car. Check their calendar for days and hours.

Final Tips for Your St Louis Spring Break Success

Remember that downtime is valuable. Schedule rest periods, especially for younger children who might become overwhelmed by continuous activity. Take photos, but also put the devices away to fully engage with your children during these special moments.

Whether traveling far or staying local, spring break is about creating memories and strengthening family bonds. With thoughtful preparation and a flexible attitude, you can ensure a safe, healthy, and joyful experience for everyone.
